Having established communities in England and set up new foundation in Sri Lanka, Mother Mary Garson, the Foundress of Grace and Compassion Benedictines, visited India in 1973. Sr. Pauline, the first Indian Sister who had been introduced to the Congregation by the late Rev. Fr. Amaldoss, the parish priest of Tirupattur, accompanied the foundress to India. After having inspected various locations to start a new foundation, Mother Mary chose Tiruvannamalai, wherein a place was offered by the late Rev. Fr. Capiaghi SDB, for the purpose of introducing a Catholic presence in this Hindu Shaivite Temple Town. The then bishop of Vellore willingly accorded approval for this foundation in this town which is also the place of Ramana Maharishi Ashram.
In 1975, the first Indian Community was formed with three sisters and seven aspirants in a rented house at Gandhi Nagar, Tiruvannamalai. By 1977, it was moved into the first Convent which had been built with its own Clinic, Farm and Old People’s Home. The activities of the House have expanded over the course of time to meet the needs of the local people and it now runs a Creche, a Hospital, a Mobile Clinic, Arts and Craft Centre and a Technical and Tailoring Institute. The community has also grown in numbers and the Convent has been raised to the status of a Priory with four other Houses under its jurisdiction. The present Prioress General Rev. Sr. Kathy Yeeles resides at Grace and Compassion Convent, 57, Surrenden Road, Brighton, England.
