Founded on 19.03.1962
St. Joseph’s Benedictine Monastery, Makkiyad, was set up in 1962 by five Indian monks who opted to leave Sri Lanka for establishing a Monastery in India. Since its very inception , the community has grown in numbers. By 1964, it had its own novitiate and by 1965, its own Philosophate. In 1983 the monastery was rased to the status of Conventual Priory. Today the monastery has five dependent houses. Following the tradition, Sylvestrine monks engage themselves in common life and prayer manual work, apostolic ministry, education, retreat preaching and hospitality.
Today, St. Joseph’s Monastery runs parishes of Syro – Malabar and Latin rites, educational institutions, a Philosophate, a type-writing institute, a Computer centre and a Social work Centre. The monastery has newly instituted a Retreat Centre (Shanthi Nikethan : Benedictine Ecumenical, Inter-Religious and Spiritually Centre) and it invites people of all faiths and status for prayer and reflection.
